1. Core Components:
  • Fiber Laser Source:
The heart of the machine, it generates a laser beam by amplifying light through fiber optics doped with rare-earth elements like ytterbium. This results in a powerful, stable, and efficient laser.

  • Galvanometer (Galvo) Scanner:
High-speed mirrors controlled by galvanometers direct the laser beam rapidly and precisely over the material’s surface.

  • Focusing Lens (F-Theta Lens):
Focuses the laser beam into a fine, concentrated spot, which increases energy density for precise marking.

  • Control Unit & Software:
Manages the laser’s parameters (power, speed, frequency) and allows the user to upload and modify designs, text, barcodes, etc.

  • Worktable or Marking Bed:
The platform where materials are placed for marking, often equipped with fixtures to hold items securely.

  • Cooling System:
Fiber lasers are air-cooled, reducing the need for complex cooling systems found in other laser types.

2. How It Works:
  1. Design Input:

    • The user creates or imports a design using specialized software (like EZCAD).
    • The file is sent to the machine’s controller.
  2. Laser Generation:

    • The fiber laser source emits a high-energy laser beam in the near-infrared spectrum (usually around 1064 nm wavelength).
  3. Beam Delivery & Focusing:

    • The beam travels through flexible fiber optics to the galvo scanner.
    • The galvo mirrors direct the beam, while the focusing lens concentrates it into an ultra-fine spot.
  4. Marking Process:

    • The focused beam hits the material’s surface, generating intense heat (up to thousands of degrees Celsius) in a localized area.
    • This causes oxidation, ablation, or annealing depending on the material and laser settings:
      • Ablation: Removes the top layer of material.
      • Annealing: Alters the material’s color without removing layers (common on stainless steel).
      • Engraving: Creates deeper marks by vaporizing material.
  5. Cooling & Finishing:

    • Since fiber lasers are highly efficient, minimal heat is transferred to surrounding areas, reducing the risk of warping.
    • After marking, the surface may require light cleaning to remove residue.
